Buxton Contemporary Opens Doors

The Michael Buxton Collection has been championing the work of major Australian artists – from Howard Arkley, Mike Parr and Tracey Moffatt to Bill Henson, Daniel von Sturmer and Marco Fusinato – since 1995. Buxton Contemporary, a new museum that will open in the Southbank art precinct this March, gives this 300-strong collection of artworks, representing three generations of visual culture in Australia, a dedicated home for the first time.

The museum, which spans 2,200 square metres, is designed by acclaimed architects Fender Katsalidis and incorporates five galleries, an animated screen showcasing video works, and a teaching space – part of the Buxton family's commitment to educating the public about visual art. Buxton Contemporary's inaugural exhibition is fittingly ambitious. The Shape of Things to Come is curated by Melissa Keys and revolves around the storytellers, visionaries and rebels of the Australian art world such as Mikala Dwyer, Ricky Swallow, Emily Floyd and Hany Armanious. The Shape of Things to Come opens March 9 and runs until June 24, 2018.
