As part of the annual ACCA International series at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art the expansive and unpredictable practice of Irish artist Eva Rothschild, RA, is presented in her first solo exhibition in this country.

Curated by Max Delany and Annika Kristensen, Eva Rothschild: Kosmos brings together 13 works ranging from 2011 to this year, including three new commissions, and is displayed throughout the whole gallery. “The selection of works encompasses the diverse scope of Eva’s practice: open and closed forms, figures of collapse and renewal, and work which extends horizontally – in relation to the ground – and others which extend vertically, and metaphorically beyond the exhibition space,” says Delany.

Although the local audience may be less familiar with Rothschild’s distinctive oeuvre, Australia has been on the artist’s radar for over 20 years. She participated in group shows at Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) in 1998 and Grey Matter Contemporary Art in 2001. Rothschild was engaged in a residency at Artspace Sydney in 2004, and her video work Boys and Sculpture (2012), accompanied by an arrangement of her totemic sculptures, was shown at Cockatoo Island for the 19th Biennale of Sydney in 2014. “I think that at the point of my first show in Australia I would not have identified myself as a sculptor at all.
