New Housemuseum
Galleries Open

Construction is nearing completion on the new Housemuseum Galleries, a major expansion of the Lyon Housemuseum in Melbourne. The new public galleries are located immediately adjacent to the original Housemuseum and when completed will result in one of the largest dedicated contemporary art precincts in Melbourne. “From its inception, our intention has been to share with others the experience of contemporary art interwoven with the spaces and artefacts of a living family home. With the new Housemuseum Galleries we will continue to explore and experiment with traditional concepts of art and architecture, pushing the ideas we began to explore in the original Housemuseum and inviting wider conversations and engagement in the fields of contemporary art, architecture and design,” explains Corbett Lyon. The new Housemuseum Galleries, opening March 16, offer a new platform for works of contemporary art, architecture and design, over a series of spaces for international and local exhibitions and events. The Housemuseum Galleries include large, flexible exhibition spaces specifically designed for large-scale artworks and installations. Featuring a 5.5-metre-high ceiling, the central gallery space is surrounded by four peripheral galleries, each presenting a different character and aspect. A public forecourt and enclosed sculpture court extend the museum beyond its walls and there will be a small retail shop and café. The new Housemuseum Galleries are being developed and will be operated by the Lyon Foundation, a not-for-profit art museum entity established in 2012 by the museum’s founding patrons, Corbett Lyon and Yueji Lyon.
