David Sequeira: All the things I should have said that I never said
With a multidisciplinary practice spanning nearly three decades, David Sequeira’s All the things I should have said that I never said at Bunjil Place is a rigorous and vibrant solo exhibition that brings together enduring elements of the artist’s practice along with a significant new work, untitled, India. Commissioned for Bunjil Place, untitled, India alludes to Sequeira’s expansive practice, which includes painting, installation, fashion, performance and curatorship. The artist has designed a suite of 56 kurtas (long shirts worn by men in India) that combines block colours and archival photographic images from India’s past. Collectively, these kurtas form a personal history of India in which singular events are contextualised within Sequeira’s intensely saturated colour combinations. Furthermore, the kurtas will be shown in a runway performance at the opening of the exhibition before joining the gallery installation alongside other significant works such as History & Infinity and his ongoing series of works on paper, Song Cycle. As part of the Indian diaspora in Australia, Sequeira’s contemporary practice explores historical complexities around representation and identity, and All the things I should have said that I never said is a significant contribution to the artist’s ongoing oeuvre. The exhibition is on show from May 7 to August 21, 2022.
