This issue of VAULT shines a light on artists for whom AI is both a tool and provocation. In April 2023, German artist and technologist Boris Eldagsen caused controversy when he won – and turned down – the Sony World Photography Awards with AI-generated image The Electrician, a work he had secretly entered. His success raised questions about what constitutes a photograph – Eldagsen suggested AI-generated imagery should be called “promptography”.
Eldagsen’s latest series PSEUDOMNESIA will form part of the PHOTO 2024 International Festival of Photography. PSEUDOMNESIA () is the classic Greek term for a pseudo or fake memory – a spurious recollection of events that never took place, as opposed to a memory that is merely inaccurate. These promptographs were made by an elaborated workflow, combining #textprompts, #blend and #imageprompts, followed by #inpainting and #outpainting techniques.
