From the Other Side
Curated by Elyse Goldfinch and Jessica Clark, From the other side is a group exhibition bringing together new and recent work by 20 Australian and international artists to investigate the tropes of the horror genre and its relationship to vulnerability, anxiety, rage and revenge. Centred on the monstrous- feminine – her desire for consumption and dual role as temptress and castrator – the show reveals our conflicting impulses to both confront and exorcise our darkest fantasies. Drawing on the horror genre’s shared cultural imaginary and ability to transgress and destabilise institutions of power, but eschewing a generalist approach in favour of feminist, queer and non-binary subjectivities, the exhibition doubly unsettles the genre’s archetypes and offers counternarratives and alternative mythologies that challenge the assumed boundaries of the body, gender, the self and the ‘other’. Mia Boe, Louise Bourgeois, Cybele Cox, Karla Dickens, Maria Kozic, Clare Milledge, Tracey Moffatt and Heather B. Swann are some of the artists included in From the other side, which shows at ACCA from December 9, 2023 to March 3, 2024.
