Reimagining the Renaissance
The Italian Renaissance tends to overshadow the broader European experience of the transformative period of artistic and cultural change following the Dark Ages. In response, upcoming exhibition Reimagining the Renaissance, at Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), sheds light on the revolutionary changes occurring simultaneously in Northern Europe and England. With humanism at the exhibition’s centre, Reimagining the Renaissance surveys the developing understandings of composition and realism – and notions of form, colour and perception – that were sweeping the continent at the time. The exhibition recontextualises Northern European and English Renaissance art alongside works by the celebrated Italian masters, drawing on AGSA’s impressive collection of painting, sculpture, works on paper and decorative arts as well as key loans from public and private institutions. Reimagining the Renaissance runs from July 20, 2024 to April 13, 2025.
