Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses

An exclusive exhibition of internationally acclaimed Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane reveals the collision of fashion, art, design, science and technology behind her creations. An immersive sensory exploration curated by Musée des Arts Décoratifs’ Cloé Pitiot and Louise Curtis in collaboration with QAGOMA’s Nina Miall and Jacinta Giles, Sculpting the Senses brings together 100 garments alongside contemporary artworks, including shadow projections by Philip Beesley, one of Cai Guo-Qiang’s explosion drawings, David Spriggs sculptures and more; natural history specimens; and cultural artefacts that have inspired the designer. Within a new soundscape by artist Salvador Breed, the show also includes an evocation of van Herpen’s Amsterdam studio, illustrating how a dress comes together through her highly collaborative approach to haute couture and embrace of unconventional technologies. Sculpting the Senses continues until October 7, 2024.
