SCI-FI: Mythologies Transformed
In collaboration with Singapore’s ArtScience Museum, Science Gallery Melbourne’s exhibition SCI-FI: Mythologies Transformed reevaluates the Western literary and cinematic genre of science fiction through the lenses of women artists and Eastern spiritual traditions. Western paradigms such as parallel worlds and interdimensional travel are teased out across contemporary artworks, film excerpts and historical artefacts to reveal possible roots in Eastern philosophy and spirituality. Subverting preexisting male- and West-centricities of the speculative genre, the exhibition features predominantly women artists from the Asia-Pacific region, such as Mariko Mori and Patty Chang. In its Melbourne iteration, SCI-FI introduces additional works by First Nations artists whose practices draw on rich cultural traditions. SCI-FI open August 3, 2024.
