Cao Fei: My City is Yours
Opening at the end of 2024, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is mounting the largest exhibition of Cao Fei’s work ever presented in Australia. Through subtle humour and dynamic energy, Fei’s celebrated practice documents the rapid urbanisation and digital revolutions of China across the 21st century. For My City is Yours, the gallery’s exhibition space becomes a temporally and culturally ambiguous cityscape. Designed by the artist in collaboration with Hong Kong’s Beau Architects, visitors enter through a 1960s replica Beijing cinema foyer and exit out of an homage to a Sydney yum cha restaurant. A part of the 2024–25 Sydney International Art Series, this survey show presents a cyberfuturistic view of the rapid evolution of cities, including possibilities for self-reinvention melding cosplay, hip-hop and gaming influences. My City is Yours runs from November 30, 2024 to April 13, 2025.
