Julie Mehretu: A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory
The work of acclaimed painter Julie Mehretu receives its first survey exhibition in the Australia and Asia Pacific region at the Museum of Contemporary Art, as part of the 2024–25 Sydney International Art Series. More than 80 paintings and works on paper dating from 1995 to the present day – including the major cycle of nine paintings Femenine in nine (2023), the TRANSpaintings (2023–24) and several new commissions – offer a historical overview of the artist’s practice. A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory is a timely presentation; Mehretu’s layered, abstract, often monumentally-scaled paintings reference history while offering incisive explorations of some of the most urgent contemporary issues, from migration and climate change to global capitalism and technology. The exhibition runs from November 29, 2024 to April 27, 2025.
