Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment
Amidst the fuss over the centenary of Surrealism, the United States’ National Gallery of Art celebrates another seminal art movement with a landmark exhibition marking 150 years of Impressionism. Developed with the Musée d’Orsay, Paris – where it showed first – Paris 1874 features 125 artworks including paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs from both the First Impressionist Exhibition and the official Paris Salon of that same year. Presenting them in conversation, Paris 1874 highlights the radicalism of Impressionism, which emerged as a reaction against the conservative academic traditions and strictures that dominated the official annual Salons. Paris 1874 runs from September 8, 2024 to January 19, 2025.
