Yayoi Kusama
Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria will, as of December, be home to one of the world’s most comprehensive retrospective exhibitions of iconic octogenarian artist Yayoi Kusama. The exhibition will take over the entire ground floor of the gallery with nearly 200 works, many of which are being shown in Australia for the first time. Along with the towering sculpture Dancing Pumpkin, conceived in 2020, the show will feature several of Kusama’s famous immersive rooms, including a debut of the artist’s recent infinity mirror room work. Showstopping pieces will appear alongside an evocation of Kusama’s New York studio as well as photographs, film, letters and more from the artist’s personal archive, offering an intimate perspective into her performance art, fashion designs, activism and radical ‘happenings’ since the 1960s. Yayoi Kusama runs from December 15, 2024 to April 21, 2025.
