In another exciting world premiere for The Art Gallery of Western Australia, it is host to legendary Franco-Haitian photographer Henry Roy’s first survey exhibition. Impossible Island conveys the visual poetry for which Roy is known, comprising 113 photographs spanning 1983 to 2023 and shooting locations such as Haiti, Ibiza, Paris, Dakar, Cameroon, Normandy, Marrakesh, Thailand and the Ivory Coast. Drenched in sunlight and, in many cases, bound by water, the works featured in Impossible Island draw on a range of influences, from the artist’s own experience of exile to his love of literature and French New Wave cinema.
