Form and Feeling: Artists’ Studies of the Twentieth Century

The State Art Collection of Western Australia contains significant examples of paintings alongside their preparatory sketches. Drawing from this, the exhibition Form and Feeling explores the centrality of drawing in the practices of leading 20th century British and Australian artists, including Stanley Spencer, William Dobell, Russell Drysdale and Frank Auerbach. In the hands of these emerging Modernists, preparatory drawings were propelled from functional study tools into sites of creative exploration upon which artists applied a multiplicity of techniques, processes and materials. Form and Feeling invites audiences to discover the changing relationship between sketch and finished work, and the influence of these artists on society. The exhibition continues until May 4, 2025.
