Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature

With 2024 marking the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich’s birth, The Met dedicates its first major exhibition of 2025 to the influential German Romantic artist. Epitomising the concept of the sublime in his paintings, Friedrich was at the forefront of a group of artists redefining our understanding of the bond between nature and the inner self. Roughly 75 works by the artist – across oil paintings, finished drawings and working sketches – form the basis of the exhibition, augmented by select pieces by his contemporaries to reveal the artist’s unique vernacular and the context within which he was working. The Soul of Nature runs from February 8 to May 11, 2025.
