Leigh Bowery!

Australian-born, multi-talented creative Leigh Bowery left an indelible mark on the London scene of the 1980s and ’90s as a club kid, fashion designer, model, artist, performer and provocateur. In 2025, Tate Modern honours the icon with a major, much-anticipated exhibition. Leigh Bowery! is a dynamic portrait of the artist, following his pursuits from club to stage to gallery through a display of costumes, painting, photography and video. Collaborators – including Nicola Rainbird, Mr Pear, Fergus Greer and Michael Clark – are also represented through objects and installations. DJ Jeffrey Hinton’s music and video installation brings Bowery’s Taboo nightclub to life, alongside excerpts from films by Dick Jewell and Charles Atlas. Leigh Bowery! also looks to its star as a muse, including portraits by Lucian Freud who, alongside Lee Alexander McQueen, attended Bowery’s final performance with his art-pop band Minty. Leigh Bowery! runs from February 28 to August 31, 2025.
