Ithell Colquhoun: Between Worlds
Covering the mid 1920s to the 1980s, Between Worlds at Tate St Ives surveys the career of often overlooked key British Surrealist Ithell Colquhoun. The loosely chronological exhibition maps the development of her singular oeuvre, from early works made during her time at the Slade School of Fine Art, which incorporated occultist elements, to her later embrace of all things magical and metaphysical. With over 200 works and archival materials – ranging from writings, drawings and paintings to early theatre projects and mural designs – Between Worlds explores the intersection of art, sexual identity, gender fluidity, ecology and mysticism that characterised the artist’s symbolic universe. The exhibition, which culminates in a room dedicated to Colquhoun’s enamel drip techniques and ‘taro’ cards, runs from February 1 to May 5, 2025 at Tate St Ives, then June 12 to October 19, 2025 at Tate Britain.
