War Quilts: The Annette Gero Collection
The War Quilts displayed at Cairns Art Gallery this autumn were created by military personnel and prisoners of war from their army or naval uniforms. Over 300 years of service in the Prussian, Napoleonic, Crimean and World Wars, as well as in British India, are represented in the collection compiled by quilt expert Dr Annette Gero, which even includes examples of rare intarsia quilts. For Cairns Art Gallery, Dr Gero curated a special selection from her broader, prestigious private collection, which she divides into quilts commissioned and made for important individuals – often to celebrate victories and replicate famous works of art – and those created by soldiers for themselves or their loved ones to commemorate their experiences. War Quilts continues until June 15, 2025.
