Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio
Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio offers a rare insight into the life and working spaces of one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. Organised by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this major touring exhibition brings Whiteley’s Surry Hills studio experience to regional Victoria for the first time. The exhibition features key works across painting, drawing and mixed media, alongside rarely seen photographs and ephemera from Whiteley’s time in studios in London, New York and Sydney. These environments, whether makeshift or meticulously arranged, were central to Whiteley’s creative process and often became part of the work itself. Iconic paintings such as The balcony 2 and Self portrait in the studio are exhibited alongside immersive elements like a replica record player and curated Spotify playlist, offering visitors a multisensory journey into Whiteley’s artistic world. The exhibition reveals how the studio operated as an extension of the artist’s psyche; intimate, theatrical and endlessly generative. It runs from June 28 to October 27, 2025.
