Newcastle Art Gallery Reopens
Newcastle Art Gallery will reopen on February 28, 2026, following a major expansion that more than doubles its footprint, establishing it as the largest public art institution in New South Wales outside Sydney. Designed by Clare Design in collaboration with Smith and Tzannes Architects and Arup Engineers, the redevelopment introduces 1,600 square metres of new exhibition space, alongside a café, retail shop, multipurpose program space, and an international-standard loading dock. The reopening is marked by Iconic Loved Unexpected, an ambitious 2-level exhibition presenting close to 500 works from the collection by local, national and international artists, including Emily Kam Kngwarray, Sally Gabori, Tracey Moffatt, Archie Moore and Albert Namatjira, alongside new commissions by Fayen d’Evie, Renae Lamb, Shellie Smith and Megan Cope. A 3-day public celebration of live music, performances, talks and community art- making will transform Laman Street into a temporary sculpture park, signalling a bold new chapter for the Gallery and the city’s cultural life.
