Arthur Boyd: Tapestries
For the first time, the National Gallery of Australia presents the complete suite of Arthur Boyd’s 20 monumental tapestries, offering a rare opportunity to experience one of the most ambitious projects of the artist’s career. Woven by the renowned Manufactura de Tapeçarias de Portalegre in Portugal from Boyd’s original paintings, the tapestries narrate the life of St Francis of Assisi, extending the artist’s enduring engagement with spirituality, morality and the human condition into the medium of textile. Displayed together, the series reveals both the technical sophistication of the Portalegre workshops and the remarkable translation of Boyd’s expressive painterly language into tapestry, reaffirming the significance of this collaborative body of work within Australian art history. On show until October 18.
