Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Sebastian Smee was joined by VAULT Editor Alison Kubler to discuss his new book Paris in Ruins: Love, War and the Birth of Impressionism at Bookoccino. In Paris in Ruins, Sebastian Smee tells the story of Impressionism through the eyes of its key artists a century and a half after its emergence. In particular, Smee’s narrative focuses on the intimate relationship between Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot. Paris in Ruins vividly brings to life the ‘Terrible Year’, from the summer of 1870 to the spring of 1871, showing how Impressionism was a complex reaction to the ongoing legacy of violence and war, rebellion and disaster at play in the French capital. It also explores just how greatly the movement influenced the development of modern art.
